Let’s Celebrate! It’s Auntie’s Day

Auntie's Day Aunthood is a Gift

Our day has finally arrived, today is Auntie’s Day.  Did you know that we have a day?

We Aunties have a day thanks to its creation 9 years ago by Melanie Notkin of Savvy Auntie.  Just like Moms have day and dads have a day and grandparents have a day, so do us Aunties.

From the moment our siblings or friends become pregnant our moment as aunts begin.  We get the honour of being welcomed into the lives of these amazing little ones either from the beginning or at some point in their growth.  No matter when we meet them, we are lucky to become Aunts through blood or by honour.

I’m a very lucky Auntie.  I have two very amazing nieces thanks to my sister and brother-in-law.  I’ve been a part of their lives from the moment my sister told me that she was pregnant.  And really I was the first to meet them, as I was in the delivery room for each.  I’ve loved them since before they took their first breathe and each day that passes I’m lucky to know them, watch them grow and have them in my life.

But my life as an Aunt didn’t start there.  I became an ‘Aunt’ to my friends’ children before my two came along and that honour has just made me a better person and Aunt to all the wonderful children in my life.

I love the unique relationship that I have with each of them.  From the newborns to those that are now in their 20s.  I may not be called ‘Auntie’ by all of them, but that is my honour and my role. It is wonderful to have a place in each of their hearts and for them to have a place in mine.

A day does not go by that I don’t think of my nieces and hopefully chat, text or even play an online game with them.  For as much as I’d love to see and hug them every day, having some daily connection with them is special for me.  I can only hope that they feel the same way.

As we celebrate this special Auntie’s Day, let’s stop and think about the Aunties, and yes the Uncles, that have held a special place in our hearts and have influenced us in a good way.

Today I will think about all the fabulous times I’ve had, and will have, with my nieces and the other wonderful children in my life.  And hopefully it is those moments that have made their lives that much better, as they make my life better everyday that I know them and love them.

As in: I can't go visit my nephew on his 3rd birthday because I'm in QuarAuntine due to COVID-19. 😔
