If you are looking for something new to do with your niece or nephew, a book club could be the answer. It’s easy, cost effective, and enjoyable – Young Adult books are actually really fun to read.
My niece Katie has always been an avid reader. She reads incredibly fast, loves a variety of topics and themes, and prefers reading from a physical book (just like her Aunt). As an avid reader myself I thought that reading would be a fun way that she and I could spend more time together doing something we both love. From that, the Harry Potter Book Club was started.
I had read the Harry Potter series twice before and was looking forward to re-reading it and hearing Katie’s thoughts as she read it for the first time. I believe everyone, adult and child, should read the series at least once (it’s so good). I am very proud to say that Harry Potter gained a new fan. Katie loved it all. She devoured the books – we completed the entire series within 3 months. She took the books with her wherever she went in case she found a few spare minutes to read a page or two (or ten! She is a VERY fast reader)
At the end of each book, we would talk on the phone about the characters, what happened within the story, what our favourite parts were, how we felt about certain outcomes and where we thought the storyline was going next. The best part of these phone calls were that the conversation didn’t end with the book talk. They always continued with talking about our days, hearing the latest stories with her friends, and the excitement and drama that was happening in school.
What started with a love of reading and spending time together, has continued to grow with many more conversations about the latest books we are reading and of course, sharing them with each other. Both Katie and I love the series so much that we can’t wait for the day when Charlie is ready to join in on the Book Club with us.
