Auntie Camp was created the summer of 2009 out of necessity, but resulted in great fun. In Toronto, Ontario, the summer of 2009, the city workers went on strike and therefore the cancellation of all my 7-year-old niece’s summer camps.
As a freelancer, with some time on my hands at the time, I was able to lend a hand and help my sister by keeping my eldest niece entertained throughout the days of no summer camp.
It started with the simple creation of the ‘Auntie Camp’ t-shirt and so began Auntie Camp. My niece wore that t-shirt each day we spent together enjoying adventures throughout the City of Toronto.
The t-shirt became quite a conversation piece as we enjoyed the city. People would smile and stop and ask if I was the Auntie and I proudly exclaimed, ‘why yes I am.’
From that point forward, Auntie Camp has become a part of both my nieces’ lives throughout the year. They still request ‘Auntie Camp’ days throughout the year . Sadly, the t-shirt doesn’t fit either of them anymore, but we still hold on to it and all the memories that go along with it.
